The eco-museum - L'écomusée de la Cristallerie

Thanks to the goodwill of the Duke of Lorraine, the Portieux Crystal factory was established in the heart of Lorraine in the county of the Vosges. For 300 years it has kept the skills and rigor of crystal traditions alive.

Whether they are cutters, blowers, stemmers, quality controllers or engravers, the workers of the company all share their experience with their peers. Thus, from generation to generation, the crystal magicians succeeded one another in Portieux. The technique is mastered and, as a result of a contact with the skills of the glassmaker, the material is turned into an craft object.

The blower offers a magical show as he transforms the molten glass into an artwork which future destination we can only guess. The well-coordinated team of artists equipped with blowing pipes carry rich coloured orange molten blobs.

Present on the tables of the greatest French or foreign gastronomic restaurants and also cited by many guides (such as Michelin, Gault and Millau, Relais and Châteaux.), the productions of the Portieux Crystal factory have always been selected for their finesse, quality, elegance and ability to unlock the most subtle flavours of wine, be it red or white. Many people, including crowned heads, have Portieux's crystal on their table. The factory created the wedding set for the singer Elton John.

Throughout the tour, the eco-museum – l’Ecomusée de Portieux presents the process of manufacturing crystal glass. You can discover the tools used by the glassmakers, as well as their working techniques. The production of vases is presented on video, as well as the history of the village and its factory. There is an exhibition on the old collections from the crystal factory.
